E-Journal - 1st IAAF GRAND PRIX (results)
I am sitting on my hotel bed in Toronto, after a full day of traveling. I can’t wait to get home, let me tell you… life on the road rocks… but without your wife… I’ll give it a big BOOOOOOO!..lol. Anyway, let me lay it out - We fly to Toronto, then to North Carolina, then to St. Martian Island (Dutch), then to Guadeloupe (Fra), we walk off the plane and the humidity hits, i mean the cleanest, most fresh, yet thick air I have ever chewed! We took a bus to our hotel/resort, and for some reason we received a super suite of a room (see video below, I did my own little version of ‘cribs’ for our place) on the beach. The food was awesome, the weather was awesome… just greatness all around.
The competition was on the Tuesday, a day and a half after we arrived, so plenty of time to climatize. The competition had the Francophone Games Champion, the 2nd place finisher from Worlds (Victor Moya), the 2006 Canadian National Champion (Kwaku Boatang), and some other proven jumpers. My warm up was atrocious, I think my coach might have been a little mix of scared and embarrassed. Anyway, I reverted to some old techniques that would ensure a level of comfort.. bottom line in the high jump is too jump as high as you can.. it sounds like a no-brainer, but we often think too much and miss the point. Anyway, I ended up second behind Victor with the same jump as my last two meets, 7′3 1/2 or 2.21m (although, this was the best I have felt at that height). Things look really good for me to unleash a good one, when I can manage to put some things together. a lot more rust and dust to get through than I had expected.
This performance also got me an invite to the Felix Sanchez meet in Santa Domingo (Dominican Republic) next week, so its back to the track for some training, and then off to another island for some jumping.. this time with my wife! Anyway, that’s all I got for now….
